Arthur Drache
Arthur Drache, a practicing lawyer, is best known in Canada as the contributing editor of The Financial Post. Since starting with the paper in 1977, he has written more than 1,300 articles and opinion pieces and has won the National Business Writing Award.
Mr. Drache has served as legal counsel to the House of Commons Committee on Communications and Culture, primarily on matters relating to the taxation of the arts and artists and to the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.
Among charity and non-profit professionals, Mr. Drache is best known as the editor of The Canadian Taxation of Charities and Donations, The Charity and Non-Profit Sourcebook (looseleaf services) and a monthly newsletter, the Canadian Not-For-Profit News. He is co-author, with his former partner, Jane Burke-Robertson, of No Share Capital Corporations. All of these are published by Carswell of Toronto. He has also written, contributed to or co-authored twelve other books, aimed both at professional and lay readers, and has contributed to many other scholarly and popular publications.
Mr. Drache is acknowledged as a specialist in the tax treatment of charities and non-profit organizations and in relation to all aspects of taxation of the arts and artists. His clientele includes arts groups representing almost all mediums. He is Secretary of the Canadian Conference of the Arts, a national umbrella organization representing artists and organizations, the Canadian Writers Foundation, and is a member of the advisory council of the International Center for Not-For-Profit Law (ICNL), after serving as Chair of the Board until 2011. He is on the executive committee of the Charities and Not-for-Profit Law Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association.
Mr. Drache has appeared as counsel in several cases involving charities before the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada and has worked internationally on issues of charity law reform.
In May 2001, Mr. Drache was named the John Hodgson award winner by the Ontario Bar Association for leadership, development of the law and service in the charitable arena.
In January 2004 Mr. Drache was named a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his work in the tax and non-profit fields.
