Eduardo Szazi
Mr. Szazi is a practicing lawyer in Brazil and senior partner of Soffiatti, Szazi & Bechara Law Offices, a law firm specialized in not-for-profit organizations and corporate social responsibility. He is also Legal Consultant of GIFE, the Brazilian grantmakers association, since 1997 and its only Emeritus Member since 2000.
Mr. Szazi teaches NGO Law in post-graduate level courses at the two leading business schools in Brazil (FGV and FIA) and is a noted lecturer and commentator on issues of NGO law, taxation and corporate social responsibility issues, both in Brazil and abroad. He has written and edited various books, including a well known work on NGO Law (Third Sector: Regulation n Brazil) and a series of books addressing relevant aspects on the subject (Third Sector: Polemical Issues).
Since 1997 Mr. Szazi has been engaged in law reform in Brazil and is a member of the small team convoked by the Brazilian Government to study and draft a new law on nonprofits. This team was enacted in 1999 and introduced the concept of Public Interest Civil Society Organization with distinguished rules on governance, accountability and transparence. Presently, he is engaged in additional law bills on the national, state and local levels, and has testified before Congress in several hearings on NGO and civil society issues.
Mr. Szazi is a graduate of University of Sao Paulo Law School. Currently he is a PhD candidate with Leiden University in the Netherlands, and he is researching the role of civil society organizations within the definition of International Law.
