Caroline McCarthy

Caroline McCarthy is a media executive and former journalist who works as the vice president of communications and content at true[X]. She was a member of TED’s Residency cohort for the spring of 2018, researching how bad practices in advertising affect human behavior.

Prior to true[X], Caroline worked as a product marketer at Google and a print and on-camera journalist for CNET, where she was one of the first reporters to have a full-time focus on then-emerging social media companies like Facebook and Twitter. She was named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Media list in 2012 and has spoken at global media and innovation events like SXSW Interactive, Summit Series, and Social Media Week; provided commentary on radio and television outlets like CNBC, NPR, and CBS; and written about technology and digital culture for outlets as varied as TechCrunch and Vogue.

Caroline serves on several nonprofit boards, including education technology organization Mouse and the advisory council of the Center for Democracy and Technology. A graduate of Princeton University, Caroline currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.
