Getting There: From Arlanda Airport
Most international flights arrive at the Arlanda Airport. There are several options for transport from Arlanda and the Clarion Hotel Sign:
-
Train: The best way to get to the Clarion Hotel Sign is to take the Arlanda Express train, which operates between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station every 15 minutes throughout the day. The travel time is only 20 minutes. The fare is 260SEK (approximately US$33/£21/€27) for a single (one-way) ticket, or you can purchase a return (round trip) fare for 490SEK (approximately US$63/£40/€52). You may book your ticket ahead of time at https://www.arlandaexpress.com/, or pay in person with cash or credit card. When you arrive at the Central Station, look for signs for the Hotel Clarion (it will be on the left hand side) immediately upon getting off the train. The Hotel is a 2-minute walk from the train station.
-
Bus: Buses also operate to/from Arlanda Airport to the City Terminal near the Central Station in Stockholm about every 10 minutes throughout the day. The journey takes 45 minutes and costs SEK 99 (US$13/£8/€10). Book tickets online here (discounted internet prices available)
-
Taxi: A number of taxi companies operate in Stockholm, and their rates can vary. Note that there are fixed rates for transfers to and from Stockholm Arlanda Airport ranging from SEK 395-599 (US$51-77/£33-49/€41-63). Make sure to confirm the rate before you leave the airport. Please be aware that taxis from Arlanda airport are very expensive, we encourage all participants to take the Arlanda Express.
Getting There: From Stockholm Bromma Airport
If flying into Stockholm Bromma airport, you can take a non-stop airport bus to the City Terminal, close to the Central Station in Stockholm. The fare is 85 SEK (approximately US$10/£7/€9) one-way.
You can also ride the Stockholm Transport (SL) local bus to and from Bromma Airport. Please note that you must buy your ticket in advance.

Visas
Please note that it is the participant’s responsibility to investigate and comply with the visa requirements for his or her country. To determine whether or not you need a visa, please visit Sweden’s website. For further information, please consult the web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden. Information on embassies, consulates, and consular affairs can be viewed here. Those participants who need to travel to a third country to secure a visa are advised to contact the indicated foreign Embassy in advance to ensure that the information on the websites is accurate. ICNL is generally not in a position to pay for or reimburse visa fees, but ICNL will assist in providing invitation letters as required. If approved in writing, for fellowship applicants, ICNL will reimburse the visa fee. The visa application process takes some time and we request that any participant requiring a visa invitation letter notify ICNL as soon as possible, but no later than February 27, 2015, so that we may begin processing the invitation letter required to obtain a visa.
Travel Insurance
Participants are encouraged to purchase health and accident insurance to cover their travel in Sweden.
Host City: Stockholm
We are thrilled to organize the Global Forum 2015 in the wonderful city of Stockholm. We hope the information below is helpful as you plan your travel.
Please visit Sweden’s official website for additional tourism and travel information.
Click here to view and print a map of Stockholm.
Currency
The official currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK, plural “kronor”). Please click here for current exchange rates.
Major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Sweden. You may withdraw cash with a Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or Cirrus card at any “Bankomat” or “Uttagsautomat” ATM. In order to pay or withdraw cash with your credit card, your card must have a chip and PIN (Personal Identification Number).
In a recent Guardian article, Sweden was described as “the most cash-free society on the planet” for its high reliance on electronic payment.
Emergency Numbers
The emergency telephone number for the fire department, police department, and medical emergencies is 112 in Sweden.
Tipping
According to Sweden’s official website for tourism and travel, the following general guidelines are recommended:
Hotel bills: Service charge usually automatically included.
Special services provided by hotel staff: Tipping acceptable, but not expected.
Restaurants: Service charge included in the bill, but a small gratuity is expected for evening meals.
Taxi drivers: Tipping a few extra kronor is generally expected.
Weather
The average temperature during the month of May in Stockholm ranges from about 57-64°F/13°- 17°C. In May, the sunrise in Stockholm is around 4:52 AM and sunset is around 9:03 PM.
A jacket or raincoat is advisable as the weather can be unpredictable. An umbrella can also come in handy.
Time Zone
Sweden conforms to Central European Time, which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
Electricity
The normal electric current in Sweden is 220 volts AC in 50 cycles. Plugs and sockets may differ from those in other parts of the world, so we recommend that participants bring adapters or transformers for electrical appliances.
Electronics that work on both 110 and 220 volts can be used in Sweden with an adapter. For laptop computers working on 110 volts only, transformers are also necessary.
Taxis
Depending on where you are in your travels you can either call and book a taxi via booking services, go to a taxi rank, or hail a taxi out on the street.
The Swedish taxi industry has been deregulated. Some companies have fixed prices but they can vary depending on the time of day and if it is the weekend. For this reason, it is recommended that you confirm the taxi fare before setting off. Credit cards are usually accepted.
Taxi Stockholm Ph: +46 08 15 00 00
Flygtaxi (Airport taxi) Ph: +46 08 120 920 00
Taxi 020 Ph: + 46 0 20 20 20 20
You can also request transportation via an “Uber” taxi by downloading the Uber Application on your mobile phone.
