ICNL advises President of Azerbaijan on civil society support mechanism

19 November 2007

On July 28, 2007 the President of Azerbaijan’s Decree confirming state support for NGOs was officially published in the official newspaper. The declaration expresses great appreciation for civil society and the contribution of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to economic and social development in Azerbaijan, and to democracy in general. The Presidential Decree documents the State’s support of the nonprofit sector and establishes the legal ground on which government-NGO cooperation may be developed. Specifically, this Decree gives the Presidential Administration authority to prepare and submit recommendations on the establishment of a State body to address the issues of NGOs and creation of a foundation dedicated to assistance to NGOs. The deadline for these recommendations has been extended till the end of November 2007. ICNL is very pleased to have the opportunity to provide technical assistance in preparation of the Administration’s recommendations.
