On April 25 in Banjul, The Gambia, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) officially launched a landmark report on freedom of association and assembly in Africa.

The first of its kind in Africa, the report marks crucial recognition by the ACHPR of the importance of providing safe legal space for civil society. By compiling international laws, norms, and jurisprudence related to these freedoms, the report will empower local actors with a powerful tool to advocate for their protection. The report also contains illustrative examples from across the continent of both positive and negative state practices as well as progressive recommendations to states for how to respect these rights.

ICNL is proud to support the work of the Study Group and of the ACHPR as they continue to promote and protect civil society on the regional level.
