Programs by Focus Area: Self-Regulation

As the role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) grows around the globe, one issue arises time and again: how to implement management standards without sacrificing freedom and independence. One instrument designed to achieve this delicate balance is self-regulation.

ICNL promotes greater transparency of CSOs and government alike, as well as sound management and professional standards.

To attain meaningful oversight in a healthy and supportive environment, CSOs must actively ensure that proper standards are enforced in their organizations as well as throughout the CSO sector as a whole. Illustrative activities include (additional information about all programs may be found by clicking on the country title):

  • Research on codes of conduct in Bosnia.
  • Research on quality standards for CSO social services with the Ministry of Labor and Social Services in Ukraine.
  • Providing of self-regulation models to South African CSOs considering improved oversight within the sector.

Through these and many other self-regulation activities, ICNL helps CSOs become active and trusted participants in global international development issues.
