Fellowships to Support an Enabling Legal Framework
for Civil Society in Latin America and Africa

The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are pleased to announce the availability of four new research fellowships. The fellowships will provide the opportunity to spend 3-4 weeks in Washington, DC during May/June 2009 to conduct research on the legal framework for civil society. The fellowships are open to applicants from:

Latin America:Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela.

Africa: Angola, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Zimbabwe.
This is an action-oriented fellowship. It is designed to provide opportunities to engage practitioners and scholars to advance the legal environment for civil society by providing them with: support and expertise of ICNL’s international staff; access to our extensive library of NGO legal materials; and meetings with NGO representatives, academics and others in Washington, DC. ICNL will cover the cost of travel to and from Washington, DC as well as room and board for the agreed-upon time period. No honorarium will be offered.

The International Center for Not-For-Profit Law is an international not-for-profit organization that promotes an enabling legal environment for civil society, freedom of association, and public participation around the world. ICNL has provided technical and research assistance to support the reform of laws affecting NGOs in over 100 countries. We draw upon a worldwide network of partners and experts to produce innovative research and analysis on legal topics affecting civil society.
This fellowship is supported by USAID and through a sub-award with Pact, Inc. under leader award GEG-A-00-01-00005-00 and associate award DFD-A-00-08-00332-00. The Legal Enabling Environment Program (LEEP) is designed to help establish legal frameworks that protect and promote civil society through technical assistance, strengthening local capacity, and developing NGO legal research.
