Research Fellowship Announcement:
The ICNL Middle East Associative Rights Initiative

February 20, 2007

The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is pleased to announce the availability of two new Middle East Associative Rights Initiative Senior Research Fellowships. The ICNL Senior Research Fellowships will provide two highly-qualified individuals the opportunity to spend one month in Washington, DC to conduct cutting-edge research on the laws affecting civil society in Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region. Fellowships will cover the cost of travel to and from Washington, DC as well as room and board for one month. No honorarium will be offered.

Senior Research Fellows will work with ICNL to design programs of study to be carried out during the fellowships that will assist them in pursuing their research interests. These programs will include, at a minimum, 1) access to ICNL’s staff of lawyers with expertise in civil society law; 2) use of ICNL’s extensive library of laws, original research, and other materials on the topic of civil society law and legal reform; and 3) visits with local experts, NGOs, and academic institutions relevant to the Fellows’ chosen field of research.

Fellows will be expected to complete high-quality research papers by the close of their time in Washington, DC; ICNL will then work with the Fellows to edit, publish, and distribute their research in local and international outlets. Fellows will also have the opportunity to apply for funding through an ICNL small grant program to support follow-up initiatives once they return to their home countries.

Previous fellowship recipients have conducted research on a variety of issues, including the tensions between effective NGO advocacy and good internal governance created by Egypt’s restrictive NGO laws; a history and analysis of Algeria’s restrictive law on associations; an essay considering how to develop a concept of civil society that is appropriate to the Middle East context; an analysis of the existing Jordanian laws governing civil society and proposal for a new law; and a study of the legal environment and other obstacles that hinder development of the civil society sector in the Arab world.

Apply online now or download the application (Microsoft Word) (Adobe PDF) and email, mail, or fax it in. For more information, please contact ICNL Middle East / North Africa Specialist Kareem Elbayar by email at kelbayar@icnl.org or by telephone at + 001 (202) 452-8600 x. 229.
