Protection of US Non-Governmental Organizations in Egypt under the Egypt - US Bilateral Investment Treaty
In 2011, armed personnel of the Egyptian government detained employees and seized documents and computers from several NGOs. This paper considers the actions of the Egyptian government in light of the Egypt - US bilateral investment treaty. English
The revolutionary changes sweeping across the Middle East and North Africa highlight the critical role that civil society will play in the economic, social, and political development of the region. However, if civil society organizations are to reach their true potential as partners in development, an enabling and supportive legal environment is necessary.
