2012-2013 Annual Report

Raising Civic Voice

Around the world, the law has increasingly been used as a tool to silence the voice of civil society. ICNL’s 2012-2013 Annual Report details our work to lead efforts to address this troubling trend. At the international level, we worked with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association to provide tools to empower partners seeking to enhance civic space and global philanthropy. At the regional level, we supported networks of civil society legal experts in every region, launching new initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. And at the local level, we worked in over 100 countries, engaging with partners to promote civil society-government cooperation, to guard against overreaching effects from counter-terrorism legislation, and more.
