ICNL’s resources and information on Kenya.

Overview

ICNL provides comments on proposed bills that impact on freedom of expression, association, and assembly such as the Associations Bill, amendments to the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the Information and Communications (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and specific legal measures introduced by government in response to Covid-19. ICNL actively engages the Civil Society Protection Platform, the Civil Society Reference Group and other partners on diverse civic space issues and has commenced a new program to support local CSOs in shifting the legal and policy landscape. ICNL works with the Kenya Community Development Foundation to engage foundations and trusts, universities, individuals, religious institutions, not-for-profit organizations and communities, to advocate for an enabling legislative framework for foundations in Kenya to enhance local philanthropy.

Global Grantmaking Country Notes

In partnership with the Council on Foundations, ICNL maintains reports on thirty-four countries that help U.S grantmakers undertake equivalency determinations for foreign grantees. The reports in this series describe the legal frameworks for nonprofit organizations and provide translations of relevant legislative provisions.

Civil Society Organization Sustainability Index

The index, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development for twenty years, documents the development of civil society in seventy-one countries around the world, including Kenya. ICNL and FHI 360 work with local partners to produce the index annually.
