Tanzania

ICNL’s resources and information on Tanzania.

Overview

ICNL is currently implementing a multi-year program in Tanzania to strengthen civil society’s ability to successfully advocate for an improved legal environment that expands operating space for civil society at local, national, and regional levels. We have analyzed a number of restrictive laws that impact these fundamental freedoms, including amendments to the Statistics Act, the Online Content Regulations, the NGO Regulations, and the Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No.3) Act, which introduces restrictive amendments to several laws, including the NGO Act, the Societies Act, the Companies Act and the Films and Stage Plays Act. ICNL is supporting CSOs to develop legal knowledge and advocacy capacity and encourages collaboration between media and civil society.

ICNL is partnering with the American Bar Association, and CSOs in the region, to implement a new rule of law program aimed to enhance protection of fundamental freedoms and civic space in Tanzania and Uganda; focusing on promoting legal and policy reforms, research to foster advocacy and strategic litigation as well as capacity building of strategic local partners targeting lawyers, human rights defenders, journalists and human rights defenders at risk.

ICNL is opposed to all forms of trafficking in persons and is committed to mitigating the risk of trafficking in persons in connection with its operations and programs. It is the policy of ICNL to comply fully with the provisions of our cooperative agreements regarding trafficking in persons. Read our full policy here.
