There are many challenges for women-led civil society organizations in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in the conservative Gulf countries.

In this briefer, Mariam Al Rowaie discusses the role of women-led civil society organizations in the Gulf region, using Bahrain as an example. The piece explores how these organizations are established, the challenges and obstacles they face, and the restrictions imposed on them, including limits to their workspaces and lack of funding from both governmental and international sources.  Furthermore, the briefer examines the impact of social views on feminist civil society organizations that call for gender equality, including accusations of dismantling family bonds and the lack of female volunteers.
