About USCNL

The U.S. Center for Nonprofit Law (USCNL) works to create a legal environment that protects and strengthens nonprofits and civic participation in the U.S. We believe all people should be free to join together and act on behalf of their communities and causes they care about.

USCNL is a trusted, nonpartisan resource for organizations, advocates, and policymakers. We track legal developments and provide cutting-edge analysis and practical resources to those navigating the law and those working to improve it. Our work addresses some of the most urgent legal issues facing nonprofits and civic participation today, including:

  • Navigating threats to tax-exempt status
  • Protecting the right to peaceful assembly
  • Responding to government investigations
  • Reforming national security laws that threaten civil liberties

USCNL is an initiative of the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), a global organization with over thirty years of experience improving the legal environment for civil society around the world. Before September 2026, USCNL was known as ICNL’s U.S. Program. To learn more about ICNL, visit ICNL.org.
