It also claims that Bloomberg Philanthropies is furthering Chinese interests, including through supporting Energy Foundation China and the US-based Energy Foundation. The letter notes concern that Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support of environmental organizations and the allegedly Chines Communist Party (CCP)-linked Energy Foundation China may result in American climate activists “knowingly or unknowingly acting as agents of the CCP.” It concludes by requesting documents and information related to its grants to organizations engaged in environmental advocacy.

In a letter to the International Association of Machinists (IAM), the Senate HELP Committee raises concerns that the union has used member dues to “finance[] efforts to change U.S. policy related to the Cuban regime…instead of supporting American workers’ priorities.” As examples, the letter claims that at least one local IAM Union official and one union member have organized or participated in a meeting as part of the U.S. Hands Off Cuba campaign to “change U.S.-Cuba policy,” and that the IAM District 190 Area Director appeared in a video released by the Cuban Embassy “urging Americans to protest in defense of “the solidarity of Cuba.”” The letter concludes by requesting information about IAM Union member dues (especially in relation to its activities that allegedly aim to change US-Cuba policy) and its policies and contacts connected to Cuba.

In letters to several unions, the House Education and Workforce Committee expressed concern that the unions that “diverted workers’ dues to bankroll partisan political agendas and lavish spending that many rank-and-file members neither support nor benefit from.” The letters reference a recent article and report by the American Accountability Foundation that asserts that [the unions] have directed much of their political spending towards Democratic candidates and causes despite have diverse members. Following up on the investigation into BreakThrough News, Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, and the People’s Forum, the House Ways and Means Committee has issued subpoenas compelling production of specific documents. The subpoena cover letters emphasize that the legislative purpose of its previous requests for information about these nonprofits and their links to Neville Roy Singham and other foreign entities or governments was “examining whether existing legal standards governing tax-exempt status adequately account for foreign influence and control.” The cover letters reject the organizations’ legal objections to producing the requested information, insisting that the Committee’s legislative purpose has not changed since the beginning of the investigation, that it has been “examining a specific, concrete funding arrangement” that “directly informs the Committee’s legislative inquiry,” and that the First Amendment does not “categorically shield an organization from congressional inquiry.”

In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Senator Josh Hawley urged the DOJ to investigate Plan C for allegedly acting as a “referral and logistics hub” for a network of organizations that allegedly ship abortion drugs into states whose laws prohibit them. The letter notes that these alleged acts implicates federal criminal law, including the Federal food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act prohibiting the introduction of unapproved and misbranded drugs into interstate commerce as well as dispensing prescription drugs without a valid prescription, criminal anti-smuggling statutes, and federal conspiracy statutes.

In a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, six members of the House of Representatives call on the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The letter claims that SPLC has “engaged in the partisan targeting of conservative groups” and that a recent Justice Department indictment has accused the group of fraudulently funding some of the hate groups it told donors it was fighting. Because of these actions, the letter asserts that “SPLC does not operate as a charitable organization and should therefore lose its tax-exempt status.” The representatives who signed the letter include Mark Harris, Bryon Donalds, Barry Moore, Harriet Hageman, Mary Miller, and Andy Ogles.

As part of its investigation into the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) and allegations of improper attempts by ELI to influence federal judges who may rule on climate-related cases, the House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena to Roger Worthington of Worthington and Caron, P.C. In a letter to the Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and the Technology, the House Oversight Committee expresses concern that “left-wing activists have coopted otherwise apolitical standards-setting bodies to compel policy on unwilling companies.” The letter cites as one example the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)’s partnership with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which was established by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, to integrate its carbon emission framework into ISO standards.
