The CSI utilizes the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process to raise concerns and challenge states on civic space issues. The UPR is the only universal peer review mechanism that provides the opportunity to review states’ commitment to their international human rights obligations. The process also allows civil society engagement in producing evidence and advocating for recommendations.

Key accomplishments
With CSI support, CSOs submit shadow reports to the UPR, enabling members of civil society to be heard during these processes. In response, 108 recommendations from the CSI were submitted for inclusion in UN UPR processes and UNHRC Statements. In addition, 59 state and non-state actors are clearly acting upon the recommendations, such as through a new statement, policy, or proposed legislation to create a more enabling environment for civil society.
The CSI engaged 943 national CSOs in national UPR processes regarding the freedoms of association and assembly.
The CSI contributed to 72 UPR outcome documents that include recommendations on the freedoms of association and assembly, freedom of expression, and transparency.
The CSI provided a platform for national civil society activists to make statements at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The CSI organized events on the sidelines of various UNHRC and UPR sessions to draw attention to some of the most pressing civic space challenges in the presence of a wide range of governments, international organizations, and local activists.
