Latin America: Freedoms of Association and Peaceful Assembly in Times of Coronavirus
Regional Virtual Round Tables for Latin America and the Caribbean
On April 1, 2020, ICNL hosted it’s first Regional Virtual Round Tables for civil society partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to address constraints on key civic freedoms in the rapidly evolving context of the coronavirus pandemic. Through online meetings in Spanish and English, civil society organization representatives from 22 countries discussed regional trends in legal responses to COVID-19 and possible next steps. The meetings resulted in a write-up outlining the discussions and examining various issues. The write-up is available in both English and Spanish.
A second virtual round table was held in December of 2020. ICNL convened partners from seven Latin American and Caribbean countries for a virtual dialogue to assess their countries’ pandemic responses against international standards on the freedoms of peaceful assembly and association during public health emergencies, using a Checklist produced by UN Special Rapporteur Clément Voule.
