New Document Outlines General Principles Governing Civil Society’s Right to Resources
PUBLISHED: MAY 28, 2014
Around the world, an increasing number of states are using the law to restrict the ability of civil society organizations to seek, receive, and use resources. A new document created by UN Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai and the Community of Democracies seeks to push back against this trend by strengthening global understanding of civil society’s right to access resources.
This set of “general principles” summarizes key aspects of civil society’s ability to access resources in exercise of the right to freedom of association. To strengthen advocacy efforts, the document also provides arguments and legal bases to support each principle.
