United Nations Human Rights Council Adopts Resolution on Freedom of Assembly and Association

PUBLISHED: NOVEMBER 20, 2012

ICNL welcomes the adoption of a UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution that further strengthens the protection of freedom of association and assembly.  Among other provisions, the resolution reiterates state obligations to protect these rights online and offline, and requests that the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of assembly and of peaceful association present reports annually to the United Nations General Assembly.

As one of the key players to establish a UN Special Rapporteur to safeguard civic space, ICNL continues to support the Special Rapporteur by providing direct assistance to Mr. Kiai and by hosting his research fellow, Waruguru Kaguongo, at ICNL’s headquarters.
