ICNL provided assistance to local civil society partners and parliamentarians in improving the draft Association Registration Law, which was enacted in 2014. Subsequently, ICNL helped facilitate constructive dialogue between government and CSOs on the implementation of the 2014 Law. In 2018, ICNL provided assistance to partners in Myanmar in pushing back against a restrictive draft Law on International NGOs.
Myanmar’s revolutionary movement stands at a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, in which opposition actors could have an unprecedented opportunity to redefine the State, establish democratic legal principles, and forge progressive practices.
The proposals outlined in this thought paper, though not exhaustive, pave the way for more informed participation in policymaking.
The Myanmar military launched a crackdown on media freedom as part of a coup d’état on 1 February 2021, persecuting journalists and rolling back a decade of legal reforms. ICNL has built a large case database of detained journalists, cross-corroborating multiple civil society monitoring efforts, and complementing them with an analysis of the legal status of cases.
After claiming voting irregularities in the 2020 General elections, the Myanmar military stated a coup and formed the State Administrative Council. In the years since the coup, there have been violent crackdowns on many civic freedoms. In this ICNL-supported analysis, Spring Archive and ND-Burma worked together to document these violations.
