Multilateral Engagement to Defend and Expand Civic Space
On September 3, 2025, the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) convened two peer exchanges with civil society partners to share experiences and lessons on engaging with multilateral processes and mechanisms to defend and expand civic space. This brief report summarizes the main takeaways from those sessions, reaffirming the importance of multilateral engagement to protect civic space amidst current challenges and outlining practical approaches and areas of support that can strengthen this work.
Key findings include:
Civil society partners see multilateral engagement as essential to defend civic space in the current climate.
Additional support is needed to strengthen the effectiveness of this engagement, particularly through resources and capacity building on multilateral advocacy, relevant mechanisms and entry points, and examples of successful past engagement.
Civil society coalitions play a pivotal role in sustaining and protecting advocacy efforts in multilateral spaces.
