Rights to Assembly and Association for “Most at Risk” Groups Must be Protected, UN Expert Says

In June, United Nations Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai will present his third thematic report to the Human Rights Council at its 26th Session. In advance of his presentation, the United Nations has publicly released his report.
The report addresses the challenges that groups “most at risk” face when exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association. Among others, the report considers groups such as persons with disabilities, youth, women, LGBTI individuals, minority groups, indigenous peoples, and migrant groups.
ICNL helped develop the conceptual framework for this report during an expert consultation convened by Mr. Kiai in December 2013. ICNL continues to support Mr. Kiai’s mandate by hosting a research fellow in our Washington, DC office and through the Civic Space Initiative.
