The book opens with an introduction and general chapters–“A Critique of the Notion of Civil Society as the ‘Third Sphere,'” “The Civil Society-Governance Interface: An Indian Perspective,” “The Crisis of Governance,” “Civil Society and the Goal of Good Government,” “Corruption and the Right to Information”–and then features five case studies. Coeditor Rajesh Tandon is the founder and president of the Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), a nonprofit development organization that supports grassroots initiatives in India; Ranjita Mohanty heads PRIA’s academic linkage and research program.
