Liability of Not-for-Profit Organizations

Letter from the Editor

The International Journal
of Not-for-Profit Law

Volume 4, Issue 2-3, March 2002

Dear Readers,

This is a combined Issue 2/3 of Volume 4, coming to you a bit late because of various unforeseen problems with production.  We are sorry for the delay, but we hope the quality of the issue more than makes up for its lateness.  It is indeed an interesting issue, with featured articles from four continents, addressing a variety of themes.  In addition, it includes case and country note updates from eighteen countries and several regions.

The four articles are the following:

  • Kerry O’Halloran’s report on developments with respect to a survey he conducted (with others) of issues facing the NPO community in Northern Ireland, in particular issues around the struggle for peace between the two communities;
  • Jerald Oshinsky and Gheiza Davis’ report on important issues for all NPOs – the extent of their liabilities and what insurance policies will cover with respect to them;
  • Emeka Iheme’s interesting discussion of the way in which the international human rights protection for freedom of association interacts with Nigerian customary law; and
  • Antonio and Miguel Angel’s review of legal developments for the NPO sector in Latin America (in Spanish).

Other interesting reports discuss

  • the release of the “Model PBO Provisions” a project that was led by ICNL’s CEE team and Consultant Piotr Gajewski;
  • the final decision (a victory for the foundation!) in the Polish Foundation of Science case;
  • the truly astonishing results of the new NPO legislation in Tajikistan;
  • an update on recent developments in Canada by RCE Robert Hayhoe;
  • several contributions about developments in India, by RCE Noshir Dadrawala; and
  • much, much more!

We hope you will enjoy reading the various articles, country reports, Reviews, and other materials!  Please send us any comments and suggestions you may have.

We want to give special thanks in this issue to our Regional Contributing Editors, many of whom have contributed to this issue.  Without their efforts to find and edit good stories, we would not be able to produce such a good publication.

Best regards,

Karla Simon and Lee Irish, General Editors
