ICNL’s resources and information on South Africa.
Through its Legal Education Initiative, ICNL partners annually with the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria Faculty of Law to deliver an Advanced Human Rights Course in Civil Society Law in Africa for academic students and civil society practitioners. Learn more about the course here.
In partnership with the Council on Foundations, ICNL maintains reports on thirty-four countries that help U.S grantmakers undertake equivalency determinations for foreign grantees. The reports in this series describe the legal frameworks for nonprofit organizations and provide translations of relevant legislative provisions.
Philanthropy is important in the South African context. The country’s legal framework is considered supportive of civil society and philanthropic giving, and the government serves not only as a regulator but also as a key donor. The report explores the current state of laws and regulations affecting philanthropy, unpacking the history, and the present-day legal environment.
The index, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development for twenty years, documents the development of civil society in seventy-one countries around the world, including South Africa. ICNL and FHI 360 work with local partners to produce the index annually.
