In this report, we aim to consider the availability of digital mechanisms in three countries, namely Lebanon, Morocco, and Palestine.

With support from the Ford Foundation, ICNL launched a project from February 2020 through October 2022 to address FATF and AML/CFT issues related to nonprofit operations in three countries: Jordan, Tunisia, and Lebanon.

In Defending the Right to Protest: Resisting Government Crackdowns on Nonviolent Demonstrators, ICNL provides an overview of critical threats to peaceful protest worldwide and shares important tools that civil society can use to defend and advance the right to protest. 

This report by ICNL partner SEEDS for Legal Initiatives provides an overview of AML/CFT and NPO regulations in Lebanon, FATF Recommendation 8, and best practices for countries and NPOs to implement to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism while maintaining association rights. During the 2021 Bread&Net, ICNL held a workshop on the importance of civil society involvement in the development of national strategies on artificial intelligence (AI). The use of AI is spreading rapidly around the region, and there are numerous examples of it being used to undermine online freedoms.

ICNL partnered with the Lebanese Oil and Gas Initiative (LOGI), a civil society organization promoting transparent management of oil and gas resources, in drafting a model public consultations law.

The COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed a parallel crisis for civic space. Many of the emergency laws and other extraordinary measures adopted in response to the virus restrict fundamental rights and freedoms.

In this inaugural publication of the Civic Freedom Digest, ICNL highlights some of the key challenges that digital technologies pose to civic freedom, as well as successful civil society efforts to combat these threats.

Over the past two years, ICNL has worked with partners to conduct a landmark study of civic freedoms in Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, and Kuwait.

This handbook - published by the European Center for Not-for-Profit Law in partnership with ICNL, Dentons and DLA Piper - provides comparative information on incorporation and operation in 10 selected countries in Europe and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region: Belgium, Czechia, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Ireland, Lebanon, Sweden, Tunisia and Turkey.
