ICNL and partner CIPESA created a space where civil society, lawyers and tech experts can come together to exchange ideas and tackle emerging legal challenges.

On September 26-27, 2023, ICNL and the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) convened the inaugural training for the Africa Digital Rights Hub.

In this report, the UNSR on Freedom of Expression registers alarm that some efforts to combat the coronavirus disease pandemic may be failing to meet the standards of legality, necessity, and proportionality. The Special Rapporteur highlights five areas of concern, showing that access to information, independent media, and other free expression rights are critical to meeting the challenges of the pandemic.

The Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) is maintaining a list of the current elections schedule and plans during the COVID-19 pandemic response, as reported by electoral management bodies and news media across the world. Their list is not comprehensive but represents a snapshot of decisions and events across the globe.

Our 2018-2019 annual report aims to highlight the progress civil society is making to counter restrictions and expand civic space.

The adoption of the new Organizations of Civil Societies Proclamation in February 2019 marked a major turning point for Ethiopia.

In this inaugural publication of the Civic Freedom Digest, ICNL highlights some of the key challenges that digital technologies pose to civic freedom, as well as successful civil society efforts to combat these threats.

In a February 2018 report from ICNL, we explored the impact of closing civic space on the HIV response in East Africa. 

Civil society advocates have helped propel the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

ICNL has just published a study that focuses on the ways in which the closing of space for civil society—especially restrictions on the registration, financing, and operations of civil society organizations (CSOs)—is affecting HIV response in the East African countries of Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya.

In this article in the Minnesota Law Review, Lloyd H. Mayer explores restrictions on cross-border funding of nonprofits and the possibility of using international investment treaties to protect such funding.

The earliest forms of civil society in Ethiopia were traditional community-based organizations including idir, iqub, and other informal self-help organizations.
